In this part of the south west of England there are many historic houses and many wonderful gardens and nature trails. The coastline which is only some 14 miles south of A Country Retreat provides some superb scenery and cliff top or beach walking.
One such nature walk is the River Parrett Trail. The River Parrett sources very close to us and meanders northwards to the Severn Estuary. Its journey through the Somerset countryside will provide the walker with a vista of all that is best with our part of the world, from the wonderful wildlife of the wetlands that are the Somerset Levels to the mystical feel that this land of King Arthur can conjure up for the visitor.
Much of the history of this area is well documented and real links to the past are readily available. One such place is Ham Hill Country Park and its
large Iron Age Hill Fort. It is here that a stone quarry provides the luxurious coloured hamstone for the cottages all around the local area, including Wood Dairy.
Lyme Regis is only a few miles from us and its geology and fossils are world famous. It is a place well worth a visit, if only to stand on The Cobb and pretend to be Meryl Streep in A French Lieutenants Woman.
